Talking About: Sam Hunt's Newest Song, "Body Like A Backroad"

Alright, as someone who has often felt he's been unfair to Sam Hunt, everything he's done so far this year has made me re-think that.

Sure, his past album Montevallo had some creepy writing, and the production on pretty much every song off of that record was WAY too stiff for its own good, but I wanted to see if Sam could do better. Hell, he's proven he can be an alright writer when he wants to be (like Old Dominion), and it's not like I WANT to rip this guy apart anymore.

But Dear Lord, if his new songs are any indication of how the rest of his new material will sound, country music is seriously fucked.

"Drinkin' Too Much" was drop-your-jaw levels of creepy, and this new song, "Body Like A Backroad"......well what the fuck is this?!? Sam is the reason we pretty much moved away from bro-country and into this new wave of shitty pop music masquerading as country music (notice I said "shitty" pop music, meaning that not all pop is bad). This song though? It's undoutedbly the prime example of what bro-country was at its absolute worse. You know what? No, this song somehow manages to sink lower than that. What girl actually wants to be compared to a back road? More importantly, what the fuck does this comparison have anything to do with the rest of this song or its framing? It's vapid, shallow, and honestly, even Sam Hunt can do better than this.

The production is somehow even more stiff than its ever been in a Sam Hunt song. Throughout the song you get these fake, computerized beats, fake percussion, shouts of "hey!" in the background, and of course, .2 second clips of steel guitar to let you know you're listening to a country song, because you know, the genre has evolved motherfuckers. Get with it.

But what do I know? This will be a big number one hit and Sam Hunt will continue to creep me out with his songwriting. Congratulations Sam. I know you don't care about taking a shit over country music's legacy, but thanks.
